Fair Frome’s latest project, The Community Pantry, supports those experiencing food insecurity by providing a sustainable affordable food offer with dignity and choice to those accessing their services. The Community Pantry runs out of the Fair Frome Elliot building at the Frome Town Hall once a week on a Tuesday. This is a membership only service with members signing up to access support for 6 months.

Unlike the food bank, in which people must get a referral to access the service, households are able to complete the registration themselves. The low-cost membership of just £3 or £5 a week allows members to choose how much they can spend each week giving people flexibility and choice.

Fair Frome Assistant Coordinator Rebecca Harrison who leads the project said:

“We recently celebrated our first 6 months of the Community Pantry and have helped 56 families and individuals during that time, that’s 150 Frome residents per week. As well as providing food for members we have also been able to offer wrap-around signposting to other services too to address individual needs. The Mendip Credit Union’s Volunteer Anne Hills has been on site to support grant applications and we now have a dedicated Support Worker from Purple Elephant Family Support to provide activities and support for families”

“This project aims to support people who are currently struggling in our community with a sustainable and longer-term solution,” adds Rebecca. “Fair Frome has seen an increase in the number of people who are accessing our services because of the cost-of-living crisis and the current economic climate”.

Fair Frome is looking for any support from local individuals or businesses who can offer resources to the Community Pantry going forward in order to make this valuable service sustainable for our charity. This could be in the form of excess fresh food from allotments or in date food products from catering companies and food producers.

Following a search lasting more than two years, Fair Frome has moved into their new home. Following many years housed at the Elliott Building, just behind the Town Hall in Christchurch Street West, the local charity has now moved to far larger premises at Unit 7, Longacre, Marston Trading Estate in Frome.

The two Co-ordinators at Fair Frome Lenka Grimes and Rosie Oakley are pleased to be sharing this news.

‘This is a really exciting development not only for our charity, but also for the whole of Frome,’ says Lenka. ‘For those who have recently visited our old premises, they will understand that some time ago we started to outgrow the place. The current cost of living crisis has meant that our services have become even more in demand. During 2022 our Food Bank service alone helped a record number of 1,289 individuals, families and couples.’

The charity has always been keen to emphasise that Fair Frome is a great deal more than just a food bank. As well as providing food parcels, with the help of local traders, they are also able to pass on vouchers to enable fresh bakery, vegetable and meat products to be obtained. Amongst other projects, Fair Frome also operates Holiday Hunger and Food at Five.

‘We now also have an increasingly busy Furniture Bank and a Baby Basics service helping many households with essential items,’ adds Lenka.

In charge of the Furniture Bank is Nick McCulloch, who is especially pleased at the move to the new home.

‘This is a very significant development for us,’ comments Nick. ‘This means that we are now able to house everything under the one roof. It also means that all of the furniture can be kept in a dry and clean space.’

‘What we have aimed to do is to make our new building as warm and welcoming as possible to everyone who comes through the door,’ comments Co-ordinator Rosie Oakley. ‘Not only are we able to more than adequately house both our Food Bank facility and our Furniture Bank, but the extra space now allows for people to come inside the building and not be stood outside. The new building is far more user friendly and comfortable for everyone. It will also be a great deal easier to signpost our clients on to other services.’

‘We are all delighted to see the new Fair Frome Centre up and running and open for business,’ adds Lenka Grimes. ‘However, our ability to act and respond to the needs of those who need help the most is entirely down to the generosity of our supporters, individuals, community groups, Frome businesses and local councils. So, on behalf of ourselves and our trustees, a mammoth ‘thank you’ to the people of Frome who have actually made this happen.’

As regards the future of their previous home behind the Town Hall, Fair Frome are currently putting the finishing touches to a brand new project, the details of which will be announced shortly.

Fair Frome has had a very busy Christmas period. As well as serving increasing number of people through the foodbank, furniture bank, Food at Five and its other projects it has also delivered food to schools, Christmas presents and toys and supported the Frome Christmas Get-Together meals.

Looking to the new year Bob Ashford the Chair of Trustees said:

“With inflation still running at over 10% and food and fuel inflation much higher we know that demand for our services will continue to rise. As such we are constantly looking at new ways to support people in the town. To help us with this we are pleased to say to that our search for a new premises looks like coming to fruition and we hope to have some exciting news on this in later in January. Trustees have also agreed that we will work to open a new Food Pantry as soon as possible in the new year. Food Pantry’s are developing nationally and are member-led. They provide food at low cost to members using food given by supermarkets (not individual donations for the foodbank) and other sources all of which is fresh and nutritional. Importantly they also offer support, prevent waste and are all about dignity, choice and hope. As always, we will develop a model for Frome.

After 9 years as Chair of Trustees I have decided to step down as Chair and a trustee along with several other long serving trustees at our AGM in January and bring about fresh ideas and energy. It has been an honour to serve for this time and hopefully bring about some positive changes and support for those in crisis and to speak out about the causes of poverty and deprivation in our town. In saying this I would also like to pay tribute to my fellow trustees, our amazing staff group both past and present, our volunteers and partners and supporters without whom none of what we have done would be possible. Fair Frome is in good heart and shape for the future and I know it will continue to be at the heart of Frome.”

Bank the Food App is run by a charity and is free to download.
Fair Frome’s food bank has experienced its busiest week ever as locals continue to struggle with the rise in the cost of living.

Mendip CAB is also reporting the town is under pressure; with an increased number of calls from Frome residents.

Fair Frome’s chair of trustees, Bob Ashford said, “June has unfortunately seen records broken at Fair Frome for all the wrong reasons. The growing impact of the cost of living crisis on families and individuals in the town has resulted in the busiest week at the foodbank since we opened in 2014.

“This has meant emptying shelves and having to buy some essential items. But we have a really strong community in Frome who we know will continue to support what we do.”

Sign up to ‘Bank the Food’

To help support them, Fair Frome is encouraging locals to download the ‘Bank the Food’ app on their mobile phones. By downloading the app, residents can see in real-time what food donations are needed by the food bank.

“The app will send you a helpful ‘ping’ with a reminder of your food bank’s needs when you are shopping in your local supermarket,” explains a spokesperson for Bank the Food. “You can then choose exactly what you would like to donate and leave your donation in your food bank’s collection box at the end of your shopping trip.

“Your local food bank will then be alerted via the app of your (anonymous) donation, making it easier for your food bank to track and locate items they really need.”

For more information about the ‘Bank the Food’ app, visit the website: www.bankthefood.org

Practical tips to combat the rise in the cost of living

To help residents cope with the rise in the cost of living, Fair Frome has also produced a new ‘practical tips’ leaflet, which shares ideas on how they can save money. The leaflets are being distributed with food parcels, and the charity is also sharing them with organisations to distribute.

The practical tips shared in the leaflet are:

How to stop spending

1. Budget, budget, budget – work out where you are wasting money

3. Work out how much something costs in hours of work- how long would you

have to work to buy the items

4.Use FreeCycle – a website where people give away stuff for free: www.freecycle.org

Dear Mr Warburton,

I am writing to ask that you urgently work to address the root causes of growing poverty and food insecurity in our constituency. In the sixth richest economy in the world, no one should be in the position of having to resort to a food bank or similar service because of lack of income.

The Independent Food Aid Network (IFAN) of which Fair Frome is a member, has identified at least 1,172 independent food banks operating across the UK in addition to 1,393 Trussell Trust food banks, and food banks run by schools, universities, hospitals, and the Salvation Army.

Yet food bank use represents the tip of the iceberg when it comes to wider food insecurity levels. Recent Food Standards Agency data show that 4% of people in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland used a food bank in the 12 months up to June 2021, but 16% of people went hungry or reduced their food intake due to lack of income. Take up of our food bank here in Frome has increased significantly in recent weeks even before the latest cost of living rises.

There was a poverty crisis in the UK before the start of the pandemic. Cost of living rises which Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) data show that 43% of households on Universal Credit were food insecure in the year before April 2020. New DWP data show that from April 2020 to March 2021, 27% of households on Universal Credit, with a £20 increase to weekly payments, were food insecure yet the Government cut this much-need uplift to its main social security payment in October 2021.

Since the cut to Universal Credit, the end of the furlough scheme and the start of the cost-of-living crisis, demand for emergency food parcels and other food aid has been increasing. Poverty and destitution levels are on the rise and people of every age are being impacted.

The cut to Universal Credit, the 5-week wait for a first payment, inadequate benefit payments, dramatic cost of living increases, low wages, insecure work, the benefit cap, two-child-limit, the sanctions system, and No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) status are all behind the rapidly increasing need for charitable food aid across the UK. Food banks and similar services often run by volunteers are reaching breaking point.

People resort to using food banks because they cannot afford to buy food. However, an emergency supply of food will not resolve financial crisis and can only act as a temporary sticking plaster. The distribution of emergency food parcels cannot address the escalating poverty driving food bank use and wider food insecurity. What’s more, the impact of poverty and food insecurity on people’s physical and mental health inevitably comes at enormous human cost and strains public finances through the provision of NHS and other support.

Like the Independent Food Aid Network, I would like to see the end for the need for charitable food aid in the UK. Everyone living in our society should be able to afford food and other essentials.

It’s vital that measures are urgently introduced that will ensure cash first, income-based solutions to growing food insecurity:

benefits must be uprated by at least 8% in line with inflation

the 5-week wait for Universal Credit, benefit cap, two-child limit, sanctions system, and No Recourse to Public Funds status must be removed

wages should match the cost of living and job security must be ensured

crisis payments in the form of cash must be available, easily accessible, and well-promoted in every local authority in the UK

We very much look forward to hearing from you.

Bob Ashford

Chair and on behalf of the Trustees

Local Charity Fair Frome which is best known for running the local food bank but also provides many other initiatives including a Furniture Bank, Holiday Hunger, Food at Five, and an Assistance Scheme has spoken out about their concerns regarding the cost of living increases and the impact it will have on many people both locally and nationally. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation estimates that as a result of the increases 600,000 more people will be pulled into poverty of which one quarter are children. Fair Frome has been established for 8 years and in that time has hugely increased the range of services it provides and the amount of aid it provides. It has seen a sharp increase in demand already during the pandemic and a spike last September when the Universal Credit uplift ended. The charity feels though that the coming months will see an unprecedented demand for its services and fears that for many people in the town it will be a question of survival.

Bob Ashford Chair of Trustees said:

“We are deeply concerned about the impact that cost of living rises will have on many people in Frome who are already struggling to make ends meet with little or no reserves. The huge increases in utility bills, fuels costs, and rises in Council Tax with inflation running at 6.25 % and expected to rise to 7.4% in coming months whilst welfare benefits and pensions rises are pegged at 3.1% will have a catastrophic impact on local people and families. This isn’t shroud waving – the reality is that the highest increases are on the prices of food, fuel and electricity- the very essence of basic survival needs. With many people on low incomes also suffering health issues the need to keep warm and eat healthily isn’t a luxury it’s a necessity. We are seeing and hearing already from our clients of the dire situations they find themselves in with little or no reserves and bills they cannot hope to pay as they go forward. Our concerns are also that as demand increases, we are already seeing a significant drop in food donations and expect to see a drop in cash donations as well as these rises hit the wide spectrum of people who support us. We are already having to use our cash reserves to buy food to compensate. As a charity we do all we can to try and help along with other voluntary groups but we fear it won’t be enough. We have also been searching for new premises as our current building is no longer fit for purpose. That search is intensifying given the current demands and we are calling out to individuals, businesses, developers and any other organisations to let us know whether they have or are aware of any site or building that may be suitable for our need. We are looking at all possibilities, whether leasehold or freehold land or buildings.”

For food donations please drop them at our boxes in supermarkets and shops across town
